The 10 Best TV Shows Of 2011
Dec 29th
Yes, it’s that time of the year again where I pick my top shows of the last 12 months. Many shows – New Girl, The Borgias, Homeland, Nurse Jackie – almost made the list. But in the end there could be only 10… here they are!
REVENGE: There were shows this year with better writing, better directing and better acting. But NOTHING on our screens in 2011 was as ridiculously entertaining as Revenge, the season’s most surprising new hit.
Who would have thought that the primetime soap opera would make a comeback in 2011 and that its story of rich people receiving their comeuppance would seem quite so timely. Revenge has been perfectly played since episode one – hooking us into Emily Thorne’s grand plans to avenge herself on the Grayson family – led by the wonderfully icy matriarch Victoria (Madeline Stowe).
But Revenge has also done a wonderful job of surrounding Emily with a series of equally gripping storylines. There’s grasping social climber Tyler who’s gradually becoming more and more unhinged, bisexual billionaire Nolan who helps fund Emily’s schemes, reformed party boy Daniel who may be the key to Emily’s undoing and the Poison Ivy-like Amanda who’s out to cause a whole heap More >

The Walking Dead: Finale Fireworks!
Nov 28th
Okay – now it all makes sense!
After a somewhat painful second ‘season’ (I know, we’re only halfway through), where at times it felt as though we the viewers were half dead ourselves, The Walking Dead roared back to life last night with one of the show’s best ever episodes – and an amazing finale scene.
You know the sequence in question – the final five minutes of the Fall season finale in which our team of survivors, led by the increasingly hardened Shane, released the Walkers in the barn and shot them dead in front of an aghast Hershel. But it was the final touching shot of long lost Sophia exiting the barn that carried the most power. Though we barely knew her as a character, it was shocking to watch Rick shoot the bewildered Sophia in the head, casting a whole new light on the Season 2 episodes so far.

The Walking Dead: MORE Walking, LESS Talking Please!
Nov 1st
(BE WARNED – SPOILERS ALERT)
Okay everyone – how are you all finding season 2 of The Walking Dead?
We’re only 3 episodes into the new season and already the AMC zombie series has given us some great, memorable moments. I loved the ‘herd’ scene in Episode 1, the shock ending in the same episode – and of course Episode 3’s OMG revelation of what happened on Shane’s trip to the zombie infested school (more on that scene in a moment!)
But I’m afraid I do have one pretty big criticism of the season so far – and I have a feeling quite a few of you out there are feeling the same way. Is it just me or has Season 2 been really TALKY so far?
Now I don’t mind slow paced shows. You’ve all heard me raving about Mad Men here on the site and that isn’t exactly a zippy show. And Homeland, which I’m also following at the moment, is also a pretty slow series. But for me, The Walking Dead has crossed over and actually become a tad – dare I say it – boring at times!

Zombies, Vampires And Cable Copycats
Jan 31st
Don’t you just love the broadcast networks – always so ahead of the programming curve!
Last week it was announced that The CW was developing a new zombie series called The Awakening, centering on two sisters who will face off against one another in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. This follows the news that NBC has its own zombie series in the works called Zombies Vs Vampires. But will either be able to capture the magic of AMC’s Walking Dead, the ratings smash that spurred the current zombie trend… I doubt it.
We don’t know many details about either show at the moment but personally I fear the worst. If you close your eyes you can already cast the two leads of The Awakening. They’ll come from the CW cute tough girl factory – all hard bodies, kick ass martial arts and cheerleader looks. And as for the show, it’ll be horror movie lite – just like Supernatural or The Vampire Diaries, PG rated thrills for teen girls who’d probably cry hysterically if they ever saw a real horror movie like the original Elm Street or a George A Romero bloodbath.
As for the NBC show, is it just me or does Zombies Vs More >

THE TOP 10 TV SHOWS OF 2010
Dec 31st
It’s that time of the year again – our chance to countdown the best of the 2010!
And while there was plenty of bad TV this year (much of it on E!) and several former favorites which disappointed (Glee, True Blood, American Idol), there was enough strong shows to prove once again we’re in a golden era of TV viewing…
Here’s my picks for 2010 – in no particular order!
MAD MEN: Hands down THE best TV show of the year was undoubtedly Mad Men, a show that’s pretty much TV perfection. I mean seriously, did the show even put a single foot wrong all season?
I’ve been a Mad Men fan from day one but I’d be the first to admit the first couple of seasons could be a tad slow at times. But since the sensational third season Mad Men hasn’t looked back. Season 4 offered us a new agency for a new era, the fall and rise of Don Draper, a triumphant and independent Peggy and a tragic Joan. Best episode of the series – undoubtedly The Suitcase – the Don / Peggy double-header which saw the duo fighting and bonding over the course of a single night. It’s why Emmys were More >
10 GREAT TV MOMENTS OF 2010
Dec 24th
It’s that time of the year again where we all start looking back at the last 12 months – and we’re no exception here at Remote Patrolled.
Next week I’ll present my Top 10 TV Shows of 2010 – but first here’s 10 Great TV Moments Of 2010. It was a hard list to narrow down and we had to leave a lot off the list (The View versus Sharron Angle, True Blood’s gay kiss). But I think what remains is a good mix of drama, tears and wow moments…
Here at Remote Patrolled we’re going to be taking a short break until Monday to enjoy the holidays – just like our sister sites Good Enough Mother and Angry Trainer Fitness. It really has been a very full on few months so we definitely need a little time away.
But don’t worry we’ll be back before you know it to bring you all the latest TV goodness.
As always, thanks for reading… and enjoy!
For those of you missing both The Walking Dead AND Mad Men – check out this just released video spoof from the guys at Team Unicorn…
It’s a simple premise – a holiday guide for defending your home from zombies, shot in the style of a 1950′s PSA (I shot one myself a few years back for a hellish pilot I worked on!)
To be honest I think the clip goes on too long and could do with a faster pace – but it looks great and there’s some nice moments along the way. Plus it’s good to feature a video that doesn’t always come from the Funny Or Die / College Humor teams who have started confusing celebrity guest spots with actual comedy…
2011 looks to be another big year for zombies with a super-sized season 2 of The Walking Dead at Halloween and the movie version of Pride And Prejudice And Zombies – reportedly starring either Natalie Portman or Anne Hathaway as Elizabeth Bennett… so it looks like zombies really are the new vampires…
Here’s the Zombie Holiday clip… enjoy!

THE WALKING DEAD: BLOOD AND GUTS
Nov 8th
Wow – how fantastic was last night’s Walking Dead...?
If week one of the new AMC zombie series was good, this follow up episode was GREAT. Seriously, this was one of the best hours of TV of the year, as Officer Rick and assorted survivors (including a racist skinhead played by perennial bad guy Michael Rooker) found themselves trapped in a department store in downtown Atlanta and surrounded by hungry zombies.
The whole episode bristled with tension and played out like a mini movie – not surprising since The Walking Dead has such a cinematic feel. Plus the show also gave us a truly memorable – and shocking – scene as Rick and new cast member Glenn smeared themselves with zombie blood and guts in order to ‘disguise’ themselves out on the streets. It was a pretty revolting scene and certainly pushed the TV envelope – but it also made perfect sense within the world of the show. And how tense was it seeing the two human characters out among the walkers who sniffed and hovered around them, ready to strike at any moment…
And then it started to rain…
Fantastic scene, fantastic show… already The Walking Dead is more consistent, tense and believable More >

THE WALKING DEAD DEBUTS HUGE!
Nov 1st
Wow – we all knew it was going to do well – but this is certainly on the high end of expectations!
Last night’s Walking Dead premiere on AMC debuted with a mighty 5.3 million viewers and a 2.7 rating in the 18-49 demo.
To put that in perspective that’s bigger than Mad Men on the same channel (which generally hits around the 2 million mark) and was AMC’s highest rated debut in its history – and the biggest cable debut of the year!
Even more surprising are those demo numbers – which were higher than EVERY single show on NBC last week, bar The Office and Sunday Night Football. Remember The Walking dead airs on CABLE – and on AMC no less!
The figures are even comparable with True Blood, HBO’s beloved vampire saga. But True Blood was a slow burner and took time to establish its fan base. The Walking Dead is a straight out of the box hit…
The big question now is how many of those viewers will stick around for Week 2 and onwards… I’d guess quite a few actually since last night’s show was a strong opener. Sure it sagged a little in the middle and could have been a tad More >

THE WALKING DEAD: SERIES PREVIEW
Oct 31st
The wait is almost over!
Premiering tonight on AMC, The Walking Dead is undoubtedly the most eagerly anticipated show of the season with great buzz and reviews and the perfect holiday launch date (well played AMC!) Could this be the show to lift TV out of it’s Fall slump… we’ll see!
I’ve posted a few clips and trailers for the series here on Remote Patrolled and here’s one last look before the show officially kicks off. Just released today this preview gives a tantalizing look at more scenes to come across the series – it’s all very Dawn of the Dead…
I have high hopes for The Walking Dead and have a feeling this could become AMC’s biggest show to date… we’ll give you the ratings as soon as they come in… but in the meantime, enjoy!
And Happy Halloween everyone!
