Winners and Losers From The Last 7 Days

THE GOOD WIFE: It’s been on the bubble for the last few months but following a series of critical raves and plenty of coverage, The Good Wife finally showed signs of becoming a bona fide hit.
Tuesday night’s episode pulled in 12.38 million viewers and a 2.4 18-49 share, up 20% for the show’s highest demo share in over 6 months. I’m personally not a huge Good Wife fan but I like it a lot more than most of the other dreary CBS offerings. Plus even though I don’t watch the show regularly I couldn’t help but hear all about the big Kalinda storyline. Kudos to the show’s writers.
So will the good news for The Good Wife continue? There’s still two episodes left to go this season so I wouldn’t be surprised to see a couple more upticks in the weeks to come…
THE BORGIAS: I’m still not sure quite what I make of the show yet, but when it comes to the ratings there’s no denying that The Borgias is a nice little hit for Showtime.
Sunday night’s episode scored 824,000 viewers (and a 0.3 18-49 share). That’s well up from the 500,000 Nurse Jackie More >

Is it just me or is Nurse Jackie somewhat off the boil this season?
We’re now several episodes into the show’s third season and while I’m still enjoying the show as a whole I’m not loving it in the way I did in year’s past. For me something just seems off about the show this time around…
Now don’t get me wrong Nurse Jackie is still entertaining and compared to sitcom slop like Outsourced and Mike and Molly it’s a work of genius. But by the lofty standards the show has set for itself I can’t help but feel that Jackie is falling short.

THE VOICE: Oops it looks like we might have boo booed here at Remote Patrolled!
A few weeks ago I predicted that NBC’s new music competition series would be a big old bomb. But though I’m going to reserve full judgment until the week 2 figures come in it’s certainly looking good for the show at the moment!
Tuesday night’s premiere debuted with a strong 11.77 million viewers and a terrific 5.1 18-49 share – the second highest of the week, behind American Idol. Significantly The Voice grew its audience over the course of its two-hour opener AND a repeat the next night also performed well with 6.14 million viewers and a 2.2 youth share. For NBC these are amazing figures. And the show even put a dent into Glee which despite a 90 minute special (intended to hurt The Voice’s ratings) actually hit a season low with 8.61 million and a 3.4 18-49 share.
I think a follow up post may be in order soon!

MOB WIVES: First up this week, some good news for Vh1!
We’ve talked about the network a lot over the last few months – and most of the time it hasn’t been pretty with Vh1’s ratings in free fall for much of last year. But last week there were definite signs of recovery and this week Vh1 can even boast a bona fide hit show.
Yep, on Sunday night, new reality show Mob Wives scored 1.41 million viewers and a 0.8 18-49 share, pretty good ratings for a cable show and especially for Vh1 these days. Personally I’m a little tired of all the Real Housewives knock offs doing the rounds these days but people are watching them so I understand the network logic. Is this the beginning of a turnaround for Vh1 I wonder?
SWAMP PEOPLE: Who would have thought that a network branded History would end up becoming one of the hottest cable channels out there? But week after week the network keeps delivering mouth-watering ratings that are the envy of all its competitors.
You already know about American Pickers and Pawn Stars which often deliver in the 5-6 million viewer range, higher than many network shows More >

BREAKING IN: Finally, Christian Slater breaks his unlucky TV streak!
After back-to-back flops with My Own Worst Enemy and The Forgotten, it was third time’s the charm for the 80’s movie star as his Fox sitcom delivered impressive numbers in its Wednesday night premiere.
Breaking In pulled in 9.81 million viewers and a 3.5 18-49 share. Sure that’s a hefty drop from lead in American Idol (23.13 million) but Breaking also held onto more viewers than any post-Idol comedies in the last four years.
Of course the real test will come next week as we see how many of those viewers Slater holds on to. Don’t forget ABC sitcom, Mr Sunshine was looking like a hit a few weeks ago. This week it ended its run with just 4.66 million viewers and a 1.6 youth share, less than a Modern Family RE-RUN! Premiere numbers have now become fairly pointless. But let Christian enjoy the good news – a lot of people, myself included, counted him out!

TOSH 2.0: We’ve talked about Comedy Central’s Tosh 2.0 a few times here on Remote Patrolled, but in a week of across the board falls Tosh is one of the few TV bright spots.
On Tuesday night the comedy show bought in 3.36 million viewers and a 2.0 18-49 share. To put that into perspective that’s as good as The Good Wife on the same night in terms of demo numbers – a show which attracts almost FOUR times Tosh’s total viewers.
Plus the cable good news continued for Teen Mom, MTV’s second highest rated smash which managed over 4 million viewers and probably costs around $250,000 an episode – compared to $2-3 million an episode for a network drama! And you wonder why the main networks are becoming dinosaurs?
AMERICAN IDOL: We’re about to begin the live Idol shows, so what better time to take stock of TV’s biggest show and compare how it’s doing sans Simon!
As you’ve probably read in my postings I’ve slowly come around to the new revamped version of the show after a VERY shaky start! And it seems I’m not alone. Sure Idol is down year on year by around More >

PAWNSTARS / HARDCORE PAWN: To be honest it’s hard to find many winners this week, in what has been a pretty down week across the board for the networks. Sure The Grammy Awards on Sunday scored its best ratings for a decade (26.55 million viewers), Jersey Shore is still thrashing everything on Thursday nights, bar American Idol, and speaking of Idol, the veteran talent show is still pulling in audiences in the 20 million zone (though year to year it’s down around 20%). But these are the obvious stories…

Winners and Losers From The Last 7 Days
Apologies for the lack of a Ratings Roundup these last couple of weeks – I’ve been absolutely slammed. But the Roundup is back… and there’s lots to talk about…
WINNERS
MR SUNSHINE: As I predicted in my Coming Soon posting Matthew Perry’s return to TV comedy proved there’s still a lot of Friends fans out there. Sure Mr Sunshine benefited from a great lead in (Modern Family – 13.16 million and a terrific 5.1 18-49 share, up 9% on the last original episode). But the comedy held well and ABC has to be happy with the final ratings – 10.52 million and a 3.7 18-49 share.
That figure was slightly lower than fellow Friend Courtney Cox managed when Cougar Town first debuted. But it’s a LOT higher than current Cougar Town levels (don’t worry CT fans your favorite show is already renewed for next season). The question now is how many of those viewers will stick around post premiere…
PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: Here’s another sign of the growing power of cable – and the freefall the networks are in. Check out the ratings performance of ABC Family’s teen Mean Girls thriller, Pretty Little Liars….
On Monday the show pulled in 3.14 million More >

Winners and Losers From The Last 7 Days
The Ratings Roundup is back and we’ve got lots to talk about from the first two weeks of 2011. If anyone ever doubted the rising power of the cable networks – and the falling influence of the broadcast networks the last fortnight has proven conclusively that seismic shifts are underway within the industry…

We’re into the dog days of the Fall season now as many series come to the end of their run – so this will be the last Ratings Roundup for 2010. We’ve already seen one big loser earlier in the week – A&E’s quickly cancelled docu-soap The Hasselhoffs – but here’s some other highs and lows from the last few days…
WINNERS:
THE SING OFF: Wow – I didn’t see this one coming! Like a lot of people out there I thought NBC’s acappella singing competition was going to get crushed in its second season. But guess what – The Sing Off is now a hit!
Monday night’s premiere was up 28% from last season’s opener, with 8.57 million viewers and a 2.8 18-49 share. These are VERY good figures for NBC, who’ve seen costly Monday shows like Chuck, The Event and Chase all struggling to climb above 6 million viewers and a 2.0 share all season long.
And the good news continued on Wednesday with 7.64 million viewers and a 2.7 18-49 share. Why the upswing? Has the Glee effect warmed audiences to vocal groups? Is the decline of American Idol boosting other similarly themed shows? Or maybe people just liked the show first time More >
