HORROR TV: It’s been a big week for horror on TV as Halloween approaches and ratings for scary series continue to rise
First up of course is The Walking Dead. AMC’s zombie epic blasted back onto our screens on Sunday night with an amazing 7.25 million viewers and an eye popping 3.8 18-49 demo number (a further 2.17 million watched the encore showing immediately after the show). That’s the biggest 18-49 rating for a cable drama series EVER!
Meanwhile over on FX, American Horror Story is proving to be quite the hit. After a predictable week 2 decline, this week Story bounced back, up over 100,000 in viewers, and scoring 2.58 million and a 1.5 18-49 share. Plus with reviewers and audiences starting to embrace the show – and an Entertainment Weekly cover this week – look for American Horror Story to continue to grow in the weeks to come.
And finally, we’ve The Vampire Diaries over on The CW. This week the teen friendly vampire drama managed 3.03 million viewers and a 1.4 18-49 share – the ONLY show on The CW all week to climb above the 3 million mark (most of the CW shows can’t even bring More >

Summer is over for yet another year – and the Fall TV Season is about to kick off!
But before we say goodbye to the warm weather months for good, here’s one last look back at summer 2011 and the lessons the TV industry learned…
1) Old Favorites Ruled: America’s Got Talent. Hell’s Kitchen. The Bachelorette. Big Brother. This summer audiences couldn’t care less about new offerings like Love In The Wild and In The Flow. They wanted their old favorites and barely sampled any of the broadcast network’s new offerings. The problem? If networks can’t come up with any new hits soon they’re gonna have some major problems down the line when the veteran shows start to fade…

2011 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS: Beyonce announced her pregnancy and Lady Gaga donned male drag. Not surprising then that this year’s 2011 VMA’s was a HUGE success for MTV, scoring the former music network’s highest ratings EVER!
This year’s VMA’s managed 12.44 milion viewers and a terrific 6.2 18-49 share, easily the biggest demo number of the week. That’s more than Jersey Shore, The Osbournes and the Jackass guys ever pulled off. In total the VMA’s were up 9% on last year’s airing.
And there was more good news on the same night for MTV. A special Jersey Shore lead-in managed 8.02 million viewers (a 4.4 youth share) – and after the awards a preview of the new scripted series I Want My Pants Back was sampled by 5.13 million eyeballs (a 2.4 18-49 share) That’s quite a drop, but I’m sure the network are still very happy.
RIDICULOUSNESS: And the great ratings continued for MTV…
Check out the ratings for the network’s new clip show, Ridiculousness, which is basically Tosh 2.0 with Rob Dyrdek hosting instead. Personally I think these kind of viral video shows are pretty lazy programming – but you can’t argue with the figures. 3.14 million (a More >

JERSEY SHORE: Well d’uh! As if there was anyone out there who didn’t think the much-hyped return of the guidos and guidettes would be a ratings bonanza for MTV. And sure enough Snooki and the gang delivered.
Thursday night’s premiere of the Italian set series pulled in 8.78 million viewers and a terrific 4.3 18-49 rating. To put that in perspective, those ratings are better than ANYTHING on network television the same night (Big Brother managed a 2.8, Wipeout a 2.0). In fact the demo numbers are better than anything on the networks ALL week – including ratings champ America’s Got Talent which managed a 3.1 18-49 (and 11.92 million). Plus it wasn’t even Jersey Shore’s highest rated episode!
Then an hour later on the same night, an encore screening of the premiere scored another 3.91 million and a 1.8 18-49 million. Sorry all you Shore haters, the guido gang aren’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future.
SHARK WEEK: I recently Tweeted if you’re not following me – that Shark Week was a bit of a washed up TV tradition. But I’m clearly in a minority in thinking that way as the latest week of Discovery specials has More >

SWAMP PEOPLE: Lots of cable ratings this week as let’s face it there’s not a huge amount going on on the network front at the moment (barring America’s Got Talent, The Voice and So You Think You Can Dance). And where better to start than History, a network that continues to produce stunning figures for its shows week after week.
Check out Swamp People, which on Thursday pulled in 4.46 million viewers and a 1.7 18-49 share, both a series high and the highest rated cable show of the night.
And let’s not forget that History also topped the cable ratings on Monday night with a Pawnstars double bill (the latter installment pulled in a stunning 7.25 million and a 2.6 18-49 share). No wonder the network is one of the leading cable channel brands out there…
GAME OF THRONES: We’ve just a couple of episodes to go now until the end of Season 1 and while Game of Thrones isn’t a True Blood size hit for network HBO, it’s definitely racked up some nice numbers along the way.
Sunday night’s episode featured yet more brutal bloodshed and also hit a season high with 2.71 million viewers and a More >

When Does It Start: Sunday June 5th at 11pm EST on MTV (right after the MTV Movie Awards)
In A Nutshell: MTV continues to move into the scripted space with a remake of the 1985 cult comedy about a teen werewolf.
What’s It About: Scott McCall is a young lacrosse player and an outsider at his school. But one night while walking in the woods, Scott is bitten by a werewolf. You know what happens next of course! Scott finds his senses, strength and speed improving and his popularity soaring.
But being a teen wolf has its drawbacks as the full moon draws near and Scott finds himself hunted down by a team of wolf hunters. Adding to his problems – the leader of the hunters happens to be the father of his new girlfriend, Allison. Expect plenty of teen angst, romantic complications and transformation scenes in the weeks to come…

When Does It Start: Wednesday May 4th at 11.00pm / 10.00c on MTV
In A Nutshell: MTV goes behind the scenes of a budding girl group. Think the Bad Girls Club meets Making The Band.
What’s It About: Meet The Electric Barbarellas – 5 girls determined to make their mark on the music scene. There’s Chelsea the ambitious one, Missy, the rocker, Gynger, the comedienne (who’s also clearly dyslexic) and Sporty, Posh and Baby… oh wait, wrong band!
Cameras follow the group’s progress and ups and down as they bicker, bitch and bond. But does stardom await around the corner?

OMG – she really IS Rachel Berry…
Check out Glee star Lea Michele BEFORE she was famous in this recently unearthed interview clip from MTV’s The Seven.
Les is interviewed about her life as a Broadway performer and is pretty much the definition of precociousness! It’s either completely adorable – or totally annoying – depending on your point of view.
Ever since she shot to Fame on Glee, Lea has been surrounded by diva rumors. And if you read last month’s Details magazine (the one with a shirtless Matthew Morrison on the cover) there’s an interesting anecdote from the author about how Lea deliberately stood next to Matthew mid-interview and started talking about how busy and in demand SHE is!
I sense trouble ahead – but what do you think? Do you find Lea’s behavior endearing – or just plain bratty?

Check out the just released trailer for Teen Wolf, the MTV remake of the Michael J. Fox 80′s movie…
To be honest I was expecting the show to look terrible – but the producers have clearly gone the more serious route and ditched the jokey tone of the original movie (and its even more ridiculous sequel – poor Jason Bateman!) I suspect the success of Taylor Lautner in the Twlight movies played a big part in their decision. Notice that the show’s ‘were-brother’ is pretty good looking!
My big question really revolves around how ‘right’ this show is for MTV? I can absolutely see Teen Wolf on The CW, Syfy and maybe even ABC Family – but is this really an MTV show? Do the MTV audience actually want scripted series? Or would the network be better off sticking to sensational non-scripted shows like Jersey Shore and Teen Mom?
I guess we’ll find out when Teen Wolf launches in the New Year… but in the meantime, what do you think? Will you be watching the show – or would you have preferred the producers to have stuck to a campier tone… start commenting everyone (oh and if you want a reminder of the original Teen Wolf, More >
Are you a fan of movie director M.Night Shyamalan?
Chances are you’re shaking your head at the moment, especially if you sat through Night’s last three movies: The Last Airbender, The Happening and Lady In The Water (undoubtedly one of the worst movies of the last decade in my opinion)
But let’s not forget that Shymalan has delivered in the past – most notably with Signs (starring a pre-Meltdown Mel Gibson), Unbreakable and The Sixth Sense (which I personally hated but I know a lot of people loved). Heck I even quite liked The Village, despite an excruciating first hour…
