Tallafornia: Check Out The Irish Jersey Shore
Dec 14th
Jersey Shore truly is the STD of the TV world!
Hot on the heels of Geordie Shore and Desperate Scousewives check out Tallafornia, the Irish version of the guidos and guidettes smash!
Yes, it seems that big muscles, fake tan, excessive drinking and hot tub makeouts aren’t just particular to the New Jersey coastline, as the Tallafornia trailer makes clear.
I have to say the dark haired guy is very hot but the blonde guy with the mohawk screams gay to me! And let’s not even get into the cross eyed blonde girl. OMG!
The Tallafornia crowd hail from West Dublin, an area I’ve visited a few times over the years – but I can’t say I’ve ever come across guys that look as good as this.
Tallafornia premiered last weekend in Ireland and proved a big hit, delivering over 1/2 million viewers (in a country whose population is just over 6 million) – so expect the hook ups and bust ups to keep on coming. Funnily enough, over here Jersey Shore has likely peaked and I think is heading for some seriously declining ratings when season 5 debuts in the New Year…
In the meantime check out Tallafornia… in all its tanned and pumped up glory! (more…)

Summer 2011: 10 Lessons The TV Industry Learned!
Sep 11th
Summer is over for yet another year – and the Fall TV Season is about to kick off!
But before we say goodbye to the warm weather months for good, here’s one last look back at summer 2011 and the lessons the TV industry learned…
1) Old Favorites Ruled: America’s Got Talent. Hell’s Kitchen. The Bachelorette. Big Brother. This summer audiences couldn’t care less about new offerings like Love In The Wild and In The Flow. They wanted their old favorites and barely sampled any of the broadcast network’s new offerings. The problem? If networks can’t come up with any new hits soon they’re gonna have some major problems down the line when the veteran shows start to fade…

First Look: ‘Geordie Shore’ – The British Jersey Shore
Apr 27th
Check out the just released trailer for Geordie Shore, the Brit version of the famous MTV hit – coming soon to UK TV screens…
It’s a well worn rowdy formula and the casting is pretty much exactly the same as Jersey Shore – juiced up guys and big breasted ‘babes’ who live for drinking, partying and tanning!
Of course British TV isn’t exactly short of tacky behavior in the first place – after all this is a country that’s featured 10 seasons of Big Brother and increasingly insane behavior on the part of its housemates (four words: Kinga Inserts Wine Bottle).
Plus no-one drinks like Brits do in the first place – so I doubt there’ll be quite the controversy that followed the launch of Jersey Shore…
Here’s the trailer… somewhere Jane Austen is rolling over in her grave!

THE WEEK TV STOPPED TRYING!
Oct 8th
Man, sometimes all you can do it just shake you head!
I’m referring of course to some of the network announcements from the last 7 days which have invited universal scorn and derision from critics, producers and yes viewers – and sometimes even make me question why I work in TV in the first place!
There was the news that the god-awful Kardashians have been awarded yet another spin off show – Kim and Kourtney Take New York (as if the Big Apple had a shortage of ‘scripted series’ currently filming here).
Then there was the announcement that MTV were resurrecting veteran series Punk’d – but this time with Justin Bieber as show host (I never thought I would pine for Ashton Kutcher!) And to round out the week was the news that a slew of Jersey Shore copycats were on the way including Lifetime’s new series ‘Brighton Beach’ centering on Russian immigrants living in Brooklyn. What’s next – another show for Tori and Dean for Oxygen – oh wait, that got announced too – Tori and Dean: sTORIbook Weddings (ugh, enough with the Tori puns!) All we need now is another Real Housewives spin off…

RATINGS ROUNDUP – 2ND OCTOBER

Winners and Losers From The Last 7 Days

NO ORDINARY FAMILY: Well I must say I’m quite surprised by this one! As I wrote in my Coming Soon piece I fully expected ABC’s family superhero saga to get crushed by its formidable Tuesday at 8pm competition (Glee, The Biggest Loser and NCIS).
But No Ordinary Family achieved some pretty solid results – kicking off the evening line-up with 10.68 million viewers and a good 3.2 18-49 – ABC’s biggest new show of the Fall. As long as the show doesn’t slip in future weeks ABC could have a nice little hit on their hands – and boy do they need it after a pretty terrible summer (the smell from The Gates and Scoundrels still lingers) several new shops flopping (My Generation and The Whole Truth) and returning veterans showing serious signs of age…

15 TV LESSONS WE LEARNED THIS SUMMER
Aug 28th
Summer is almost over so it’s time to put away those BBQ sets and beach towels for another year. But before we settle down for the Fall TV Season – here’s 15 Lessons We Learned From Summer 2010…
Networks Execs take note!
1) Scripted Network Dramas Are Dead: Witness NBC’s Persons Unknown (aka Persons Unwatched), ABC’s Happy Town and the Sunday night snoozers The Gates and Scoundrels. All four struggled to attract more than 3 million viewers a week and barely made it through their runs. And the only real scripted ‘hit’ of the summer, ABC’s Rookie Blue, was a middling 5 million rated cop show.
2) …But Scripted Cable Shows Are Hot: Where to begin – Rizzoli and Isles, Covert Affairs, The Closer, Haven, Melissa and Joey, Hot In Cleveland… this summer audiences switched over to cable big time, a cultural shift that will only continue in years to come… fact is viewers are loyal to shows NOT networks. If you want an audience now you have to work for it!
3) Weight Loss Shows Are On The Way Out: The Biggest Loser is still a hefty hit but too many copycat formats failed this summer… Dance Your Ass Off was down year to year, Vh1’s Money Hungry was an outright bomb More >

Why TV Needs More Manners Behind The Scenes
There’s an interesting piece in today’s Washington Post about the imminent semi-retirement of Larry King – and how his exit marks the end of a gentlemanly era of TV talk.
Certainly TV is getting brasher and more heated than ever on screen – whether it be Jake and Vienna duking it out, the Jersey Shore cast coming to blows or a Bridezilla freaking out over her less than picture perfect wedding. Every show teaser has to up the ante – and networks are hungrier than ever for more salacious and shocking on screen behavior.
But as someone who works in the TV world what affects me more is the often ungallant behavior I see going on behind the cameras
I’ve talked before about some of the bad behavior I’ve witnessed over the years – see my Rocky Road piece – from Executives throwing random objects to shouting and screaming on set to unbelievable volleys of expletives. And somehow people seem to get away with it – in a way they just wouldn’t in a more corporate and regulated industry.
Hand in hand with these temper tantrums is a serious lack of manners. When did people become so classless I wonder? I’m More >
